Justin P. Norfleet

Justin P. Norfleet
Oswego Fire Department

Justin P. Norfleet is a lieutenant with the Oswego Fire Department.

Prior to being appointed lieutenant in December 2007, Norfleet worked as a firefighter/paramedic and flight paramedic. As a lieutenant, Norfleet supervises firefighters in daily operations at the firehouse and on emergency scenes while ensuring their safety.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and his paramedic certification from SUNY Health Science Center. Norfleet, 37, received an academic excellence award from the New York State Academy of Fire Science for earning highest academic and skill performance in the recruit firefighter program attended by firefighters from across the state. He also earned an “Outstanding Patient Care” award from Oswego County EMS on several occasions, and a letter of commendation from the state fire administrator in 2006 for actions taken to save the life of an instructor during a technical rescue class.

Among his accomplishments, Norfleet established a controlled substance operations plan at OFD, and also taught the first advanced EMT class at OFD. He graduated 76 percent of his students, while other local classes exhibited less than a 15 percent completion rate. By working with Oswego County, Norfleet was instrumental in establishing an emergency operations center in the city of Oswego in time for Harborfest 2008. “I truly enjoy my work and want to see a safer community,” Norfleet said. As leader of OFD’s Technical Rescue Team, Norfleet secured training and equipment to be able to respond to confined space and trench collapse incidents. (LS)
