Scott M. Steiger

Scott M. Steiger
SUNY Oswego

Scott M. Steiger is an assistant professor in the earth sciences department at SUNY Oswego.

Dr. Rhonda Mandel, interim dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at SUNY Oswego, nominated Steiger for the “Forty Under 40” award. Steiger, 32, earned his master’s degree (2001) and Ph.D. (2005) in atmospheric sciences from Texas A&M University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from SUNY Oswego in 1999.

Steiger serves as the adviser to the SUNY Oswego Meteorology Club, runs workshops on severe weather awareness at local school districts, and is a member of the Newman Foundation. He is an elected member to the International Storm Chasing Forecast Discussion Group. At Texas A&M, he earned a graduate student research award in 2002 and the Montgomery Prize for Leadership in 2003. Steiger was instrumental in obtaining a $160,000 grant to install state-of-the-art weather observing equipment on SUNY Oswego’s campus.

Steiger has attracted several clients for a weather forecasting service. “These schools have continually commended me on the dedication I have to them and the accuracy of my forecasts when they decide to close,” he said. Steiger is involving students to update Web sites and answer clients’ phone calls as part of the on-demand service. He continually mentors students in their research projects and teaches them weather forecasting skills. “My passion is to observe and understand the weather and share this knowledge with others,” he said. “I can’t believe I get paid to talk about the weather all day.”

He is married to Stephanie and has a newborn son, Max Hale Steiger.(LS)
