Stacie L. Rose is assistant director of the Ronald E. McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program at SUNY Oswego.

Rose, 31, is presently working on her doctorate at Syracuse University in cultural policies in higher education. She earned her master’s degree in early childhood education and literacy and her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at SUNY Oswego.

The mission of McNair is to help underrepresented scholars obtain master’s degrees and Ph.D.’s. “It is so rewarding working with this type of student population and such a wonderful program,” she said. “My students are first generation, low-income and some are minorities and are succeeding in college. They have had to struggle and find their own way through college with little guidance from their parents.”

Rose said she has worked on the McNair grant in order to change the amount of money awarded and to increase the number of students who can participate. “We now receive the cap, which is $231,000,” she said. “We have also increased the number of students we can accept by 25 percent.” She volunteers for Person-to-Person Citizen Advocacy, which assists disabled members of the community.

She also is a member of YP Voice. She earned a National Service Award for her community service with AmeriCorps. “My most significant accomplishment is being a good mother to my two children,” said Rose, mother to Nicholas, 3, and Olivia, 5 months. “Time management and a strict schedule allow me to accomplish everything I do.” “I have always had a giving nature and have wanted to better our community and myself,” Rose said.
