Stephen Baker, OD, is vice president, partner and secretary at David J. Dexter, OD, PC, in Oswego. Baker, 32, earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Binghamton University, where he graduated magna cum laude. He earned his medical degree at the State University of NY College of Optometry in New York City. He did an externship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx in 2002.

Baker is a member of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. He is president of the Central New York Optometric Society, vice chairman of the finance committee of the New York State Optometric Society, and an Oswego Lions Club member. He and his wife Cory have two children, Marcus and Duncan.

Baker also does Web site maintenance, and is the architect and administrator of www.eyecarecny.com. He is founder of the Low Vision Center, and is one of three low vision certified providers in Central New York. He is also founder of the Vision Therapy Center in Oswego for children with visually-related learning disabilities.

During five years of practice, Baker has steadily increased patient load to 150 exams per week. In addition, he has increased communication between management and staff through office meetings and suggestion boxes. His responsibilities include doing tutorials on teaching vision in the classroom and how to recognize visually- related learning disabilities to nurses, teachers and occupational therapists.

Baker has also brought eye care services to nursing homes in the area and said nursing home residents comprise a grossly underserved population with regards to visual needs. (LS)
