Dawn Metott
Youth Activities Coordinator, City Youth Court Coordinator, Oswego City-County Youth Bureau

Dawn Metott is the youth activities coordinator and city youth court coordinator at the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau.

Metott earned her master’s degree in human service/counseling and her bachelor’s degree in psychology and public justice at SUNY Oswego.

Prior to her current position, Metott, 39, was a social worker for Oswego County Opportunities.

She is co-president of the Association of New York State Youth Courts.

After being hired in 2000 at the youth bureau, Metott created the county youth court program that helps give youthful offenders a second chance to give back to the community for crimes they have committed.

“I honestly believe that youth in our community are our best assets, but we fail to see them and use them often enough,” she said. “We need to continue to give them chances to experience new opportunities.”

Metott leads an effort to address graffiti problems in Oswego by coordinating a youth group that creates murals on the concrete walls along the city’s river walk.

She is a board member of Parents of Special Children; started a LEGO club at the Oswego YMCA; is a member of the Harborfest Children’s Committee; supports “Warm-up Oswego”, Leadership Oswego County Youth, the Oswego County Teen Health Conference, Youth for Change, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, and Halloween at the Oswego YMCA.

Metott said she considers her most significant personal accomplishment to be raising four young children 9 years and younger, three with various special needs, “while maintaining my sanity and sense of humor.”
