Michael Backus

Michael C. Backus
Oswego County Clerk

Michael C. Backus serves as the Oswego County Clerk.  At 29, he is the youngest clerk in New York state.

Backus holds a master’s degree in public administration from Norwich University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Le Moyne College. He is also a certified community leader as a graduate of Leadership Greater Syracuse.

Prior to being elected county clerk, Backus worked as a director for New York State Assembly Leader Brian Kolb and as a field director for former U.S. Rep. John McHugh.

Backus considers his most significant accomplishment his connection to the community through both his professional work life and his private, public service life.
“I have a real passion for public service. I truly believe that there are great things that humble, honest and hardworking public servants can do to move their interest area forward. For me, that’s Oswego County and Central New York,” he said.

Backus is chairman of the Oswego County Republican Committee.

He is also active at St. Anne Mother of Mary Church in Mexico. He is a board member with the Northern Oswego County Health Services, Inc. based in Pulaski.
“I am enormously proud of the collaborative effort that NOCHSI, Oswego Health and Oswego County Opportunities have been a part of to help sustain healthcare here in Oswego County,” he said. “The ‘safety net’ that we’re creating will help keep regional, rural healthcare alive and well in Oswego County for generations to come.”

Backus and his wife Andrea are high school sweethearts and are raising their family in their hometown of Mexico. They have a daughter Madelynne Kathleen and a precocious West Highland white terrier named Daisy.
