Patricia Waters
Mentor-Scholar Coordinator, SUNY Oswego

Patricia Waters is the mentor-scholar coordinator at SUNY Oswego.

Waters, 28, is working toward her Ph.D. in teaching and curriculum at Warner School of Education. She is anticipating all but dissertation and will graduate in May of 2014.

She holds a Master of Science degree in secondary education from Pace University and a Bachelor of Arts in biology and psychology from the University of Rochester.

Prior to her current position, she was the assistant director for community service at the University of Rochester.

“Professionally, I am interested in the service role that colleges can play in their community, how colleges define this role, and the degree to which it reflects the community’s vision,” she said.

“I was first exposed to educational inequity as a child in a poor urban neighborhood,” she said. “Once admitted to the University of Rochester, I was careful to select job opportunities that would not compromise my coursework. Through my involvement in the Jumpstart and Urban Fellows programs, I developed a disposition toward community engagement that extends to my professional, local, and national communities.”

She is a board member with Oswego County Habitat for Humanity and Friends of Camp Hollis; a committee member with Harborfest Children’s Park, and a trip leader for SUNY Oswego Alternative Breaks.

“My proudest community service contribution has been the coordination and supervision of the University of Rochester’s Wilson Day of service,” she said.

As the undergraduate coordinator, she placed 1,200 first-year students in over 50 agencies and obtained a $4,000 grant to allocate amongst participants.

Waters is a member of the Leadership Oswego County Class of 2013.
